If you are an avid home winemaker then making wine from grapes may be the only way that gets you satisfaction.  Many home winemakers love that hands-on feeling you get when you crank down on a grape press that makes the process worth doing. So what do you need to do?  Well you have to start by preparing the fruit to be used.  Wine cellars Illinois This entails cutting up larger fruit, busting skins on smaller fruit, removing stems and unripe or overly ripe pieces, large pits should be removed, chopping up fruits such as raisins, and bruising any produce like ginger root, etc. There are many recipes available but here’s the basic steps you then take:

  • * Set aside the Wine Yeast, this will be added later.  Then stir together all of the wine making ingredients called for into a primary fermenter (tank or bucket). As you pour the juice into the tank catch any pulp in a fermentation bag and then submerge the bag into the wine making mixture.
  • * Cover the fermenter bucket or tank with a thin, clean towel and wait 24 hours.
  • * Now you sprinkle the wine yeast over the surface of the juice and then cover again with a thin, clean towel. You need to allow this mixture called ‘must’ to ferment for 5 to 7 days.
  • * After 5 to 7 days you need to remove the pulp from the fermenter and discard. Making sure all you equipment has been sterilized, siphon the wine into a carboy in a carefully so as to leave the sediment behind.
  • * Attach a wine airlock and fill it approximately half-way with water, as the juice ferments you will see occasional bubbles come through this airlock. You need to let the juice to ferment for an additional 4-6 week period or until it becomes completely clear.
  • * Once the wine has cleared completely you can siphon it off of the sediment again and bottle.
